STUDIO HANDBOOK

Studio Rules

  • Respect Others' Work: Do not touch any works on shelves that do not belong to you without permission. If you need to move something to make space, ask a staff member for assistance. You are responsible for any breakage caused by not following this rule.

  • Recycle Clay: Please recycle clay whenever possible. Treat clay as you would food or money! If you’re unsure how to recycle, ask a staff member for guidance.

  • Label Your Belongings: Ensure all personal items left on shelves are clearly labeled.

  • Move Carefully: Always move slowly and carefully in the studio to avoid accidents.

  • Clean Thoroughly: All tools and equipment must be cleaned properly after use and returned to their original place. Proper cleaning is crucial for maintaining a safe and sustainable working environment.

  • No Eating in the Studio: Food is not allowed in the studio. A kitchenette next door provides a fridge and microwave for your use. You are welcome to bring a chair from the studio to enjoy your meal in the kitchen.

Clay

  • Recycling Clay: Recycle clay whenever possible, following the studio's reclaiming system. Treat clay with care and value.

  • Studio Clay: Our standard studio clay is Premium Buff. Terracotta and black stoneware are also available for purchase by the bag.

  • Personal Clay: You may bring your own clay to the studio. Please try to recycle it responsibly. If needed, ask a staff member for guidance. If you wish to abandon unfired clay, place it in the studio reclaim bucket with staff approval. No paper clay is allowed in the reclaim bucket.

Glaze

  • Studio Glazes: We provide tested studio glazes for your use and recommend sticking to these for the best results.

  • Personal Glazes: If you wish to use your own glazes, you must test them first. Ask a staff member for guidance before applying them to your work.

  • Preparation for Firing: Ensure the bottom or foot ring of all pieces is wiped clean before firing. Unwiped pieces will not be loaded into the kiln.

Kiln & Firing

  • Firing Temperatures:

    • Bisque Firing: 950°C

    • Glaze Firing: 1220°C

  • Do Not Touch the Kilns: Under no circumstances should you touch the kilns without permission, especially when they are cooling. Kilns remain extremely hot after firing and can cause severe burns.

  • Firing Schedule: We aim to bisque and glaze fire once a week to ensure timely completion. However, firing schedules may be extended if there aren’t enough pieces to fill the kiln, as we aim to save energy and ensure stable firing results.

By following these rules and guidelines, we can maintain a safe, efficient, and enjoyable studio environment for everyone. Thank you for your cooperation!
